Garage Kits Can be Built by Almost Anyone

Let's face it, not all men are cut out to be true do-it-yourselfers, just like all men aren't cut out to be salesmen or cowboys or doctors. Nope, we are not all created equal, not when it comes to doing projects around the house, or to putting up kit buildings. But, having said that, I am here to say that most garage kits are very doable by nearly anyone with some common sense and some common tools. I say "nearly" because there are obviously some people who shouldn't even think about attempting it. Chances are, you know if this is you or not, and it isn't my job to make you feel bad or inadequate. If you know you can't follow instructions, or can't conceptualize what to do from a given set of instructions, or have no idea how to use basic tools, then more power to you. Hopefully, you have the resources to hire the job out. Having said that, I want to talk a little bit about garage kits and the process for building them.

Like men, garage kits are not all created equal either. Some companies that manufacture these things shouldn't be in the business at all. Parts that don't fit, inferior materials, impossible to follow instructions, overpricing, and lousy customer service all disqualify them from getting a good recommendation from me and others. Thankfully, these are few and far between and the market insures that bonehead companies don't last for very long.

One of the companies on the short list of companies that I can highly recommend is VersaTube. This company knows what they are doing, and have been doing it for a very long time. They make garage kits that are masterfully engineered, swaged to fit properly, come with some nice window and door options, and are backed up by world class customer service.

So let's say you are somebody who can generally do things on their own. You understand basic building concepts and know how to use some basic tools. You order one of VersaTube prefabricated garage kits and await the eventful day when it is delivered to your house. The truck pulls up and unloads your new garage kit. The driver pulls away and you are now doing the gut check that every DIY dude goes through. You start saying things to yourself like, "I'm excited", or "I can do this". These little pep talks are a good idea when getting ready to tackle a major project. After you get through this you move on to the doing.

All the pieces are there, you start to lay them out, and the pieces actually line up. You know that all garage kits are not equal, so you take pride in your decision to buy from a good company. As your new garage kit comes together and starts to take form you stand just a little taller, you feel a little more powerful and you don't hesitate to tell your dumbfounded neighbor who wants to know if he could build one, "Oh yeah, it's easy, you can do it too."

Garage kits are not going to construct themselves, but if you are a reasonably experienced person who has the desire to build their own structure then you will be successful. Have no fear. Move forward boldly and go where almost anyone can go.

Lower Cost Buildings

Cost and durability are two concerns that are usually at the forefront of any decision regarding building materials. Traditionally lumber has been the preference for builders everywhere, but metal is quickly outstripping lumber as the choice for new building material. There are metal buildings available in just about any shape and size as well as budget. Since metal buildings can usually be built for less than lumber buildings you will find that you can have a bigger, better building when you go with metal. For cooler climates you will want to factor the cost of insulation into your price. The best quality metal buildings are coated with a protective paint; if the building materials you choose does not come with this then you will want to buy the paint to do it yourself. This will greatly extend the life of your building as the metal will not rust or corrode. Windows and doors also need to be included in your final cost. While you may think that lower is better, some of the budget metal buildings don’t include a lot of items that will increase the final price. Ensure that the cost of your building includes freight and anything else you may need to get the job done. Also try to choose the thickest metal you can, as this will increase the durability of your building and help it stand up to severe weather.Laying the foundation of any building will cost you more as well, since it is not part of the metal building package unless you are going through a construction company. The best option is to have a company lay the foundation for you, and then you can save on labour costs by putting the building together yourself.Since metal buildings have all the pieces pre-cut to size, there is significant savings on freight costs. It is also beneficial that metal weighs much less than lumber so you are not paying as much to ship. At the end of your project there will be very little leftover metal to dispose of.After your metal building is erected, the savings will continue to accumulate. Maintenance of a metal building is minimal, and the protective paint will prevent rust. Even in the dampest climates a metal building will never fall victim to rot or insect infestation.Metal buildings stand up to the elements much better than lumber, and also have a significantly longer lifespan. If you do have to take down a metal building the materials can be fully recycled into new metal, meaning you are keeping waste out of the landfills, and you don’t have to pay to dispose of it.A pre-fabricated metal building is a great choice. Not only are they easy to assemble, they also save the building a bundle on labour costs as well as building materials and maintenance. Before you decide to build with lumber, take a look at the many advantages that a metal building has to offer.

How to Build a Carport

There are several reasons that a carport could be an excellent addition to your home: a carport can protect your vehicles from the elements, keeping them looking much newer for much longer; carports are a great and inexpensive way to add value to your home if you are planning on selling in the near future and carports can give you a protected area in which to conduct projects like fixing your automobile, working on your lawn mower, working on your bicycle or acting as the checkout for your yard sale.
Though undertaking the construction of a new carport can be a bit difficult, if you're reasonably handy and know your way around some basic tools you should be able to complete the project without hiring a professional contractor to assist you.
There are a few different types of carports that you can choose from - and different levels of quality of each. Some freestanding carports are made from aluminum framing and are super light-weight, easy to assemble and are able to be moved form one location to another; sturdier freestanding units are available in which you'll need to dig holes and set concrete posts for more hearty supports - these carports provide much more protection than the aforementioned units but are a bit more difficult to build and can't be moved once they are built.
Braced carports, as a whole are viewed as more heavy duty than freestanding carports, because they are attached to your house on one side. It's true that pretty much all braced carports are of a heavy grade and more resilient than the tent-like aluminum pipe freestanding carports, but some of the heavier duty freestanding carports will provide just as much protection as any braced unit.
What do you need?
This is the first question you need to ask yourself before any carport building takes place. You need to research all of the varieties available to see which will best suit your purpose. Important things to consider are: what exactly your carport will be used for, if it needs to be portable or should it be a more permanent construction and what the weather is like in the area in which you live - the more severe weather conditions you experience, the more sturdy your carport should be.
You'll also want to check for any local ordinances before commencing any construction. Even a very simple carport may require you to get permits with your township before you begin the project. You'll also want to check with the local utilities to ensure that there is no gas, water or power lines present in the area in which you'll be building. It's of the utmost importance that you adhere to all local codes and ordinances to ensure that you and everyone around you remain safe.
How to Do It
Regardless of what type of carport you decide is best for you, you'll likely be able to find a pre-packaged kit with all of the raw materials you'll need for construction and a detailed plan to follow in order to get you through the process.
If you do find a kit for the type of carport you're looking to build, you'll still need the tools to put it all together. The plans should give you a list of the tools that will be required, but common ones used in this type of project are: a circular saw, a hammer, a plumb level and chalk line, an electric drill, a screwdriver and nut driver (or bits that fit into your drill), and a tape measure.
Depending on the type of carport that you are building, the project as a whole could be very simple or reasonably advanced. It's very important that you follow the plans that come with your carport to the letter - read over the entire instruction packet from beginning to end to make sure that you understand it before you even unpack the building materials. Even a simple mistake could lead to a hole in the side of your house or a concrete pad where they isn't supposed to be. Measure everything twice and double check that everything is level and in it's appropriate location before making any cuts, pouring any concrete or attaching any brackets. Careful understanding of this project is crucial for any permanent structure and it's also very necessary for any portable structure. Starting this project blindly could lead to an error that renders your carport unusable.
This project isn't easy when compared to some other home improvement projects, but it's far from impossible if you've got some knowledge and can carefully follow instructions.

Choose Simple to Assemble Steel Buildings

When you are in the process of designing or planning for a new building one of your first decisions is the type of building material you are going to use. Steel is a premium choice building material and provides a durable option for your new building while cutting down on construction costs and material.Pre-fabricated steel buildings are a great option for a new building as they come with all the materials you need to put it together. Framing, walls, roofing and hardware are all included along with an instructional video or booklet to help you get it completed. Even those with a minimum of construction experience should find assembling a pre-fabricated steel building to be simple and easy.By choosing to assemble the building you are saving buckets of money since you won’t need a contractor or construction workers to help you. The frame goes up first and is bolted together, followed by the exterior and roof materials. When it is finished you will have a strong building that will stand up to the elements. With all the materials included and cut to your specifications the building will produce a minimum of construction waste. A pre-fab steel building is ideal for garages, sheds or workshops and even come in sizes large enough to accommodate a warehouse or airplane hangar. The choices for exterior materials vary widely, from a wood or stone look to standard corrugated metal. Thousand of plans are available to choose from so you can find a size and style that will fit with your needs as well as your budget. Steel buildings are easy to add on to, so if in the future you need more space it won’t be a problem. While wood buildings tend to fade over time and are susceptible to cracking, warping and rot, a similar steel building will have none of these problems. Steel buildings can last up to 200 years and require minimal upkeep. In snowy areas you metal roof will easily handle the load of heavy snow, and the snow will slide off without your intervention. This is certainly a safer and more efficient solution to having to shovel the snow off the roof yourself.Steel is lightweight, so working with steel is much easier than lumber. Carrying and moving materials are easy and you won’t find warping or knots, meaning none of the material is wasted. Every corner in the building will be perfectly square, and windows and doors will fit perfectly into the pre-cut openings without leaks or bad seals. When your steel building is completed you will hardly ever need to worry about it because upkeep will be practically non-existent.Now that you can see why steel buildings are a great alternative to lumber, you should check out all the styles and sizes, finishes and options that are available. Choices for Metal Roofing

Those who are finding that their home is in need of a new roof should consider metal roofing as a viable alternative to their current asphalt shingles. And if you are thinking what a pain it will be to scrape off all the shingles you may be in for a surprise.A new steel roof can be installed directly over your old asphalt roof, saving you both money and time since you don’t have to remove the old roof before you put on the new one. This is also an environmentally friendly choice as it avoids the dumping of waste in landfills, and it gives your home an added layer of insulation.Whether you are permitted to put a metal roof over your existing shingles depends on the building code in your local area. If you have two layers of shingles then it is possible you will not be allowed to put a metal roof overtop, but if you have a single layer of shingles then it shouldn’t be an issue. The following is an excerpt of the 2006 International Residential Code Book®. Section R907.3 deals with the installation of metal roofing over existing shingles as follows:“Complete and separate roofing systems, such as standing seam metal roof systems, that are designed to transmit the roof loads directly the buildings structural systems and that do not rely on existing roofs and roof coverings for support, shall not require the removal of existing roof coverings.”Before you decide to continue with the installation process though you may want to review the following precaution when it comes to the underlying material:1)Existing roof leaks need to be dealt with before proceeding. Replace any rotten sheeting or rafters.2)Also take care of any damage resulting from too much roof weight such as sagging decking or buckling trusses.3)It is recommended that you install an underlayer on top of the existing roof to keep the shingles from rubbing against the back of the metal roof, which could lead to corrosion. The standard industry material for an underlayer is still felt paper (tar paper), however there are many newer products on the market that can offer an advantage over this standby. Tar paper can have issues when installed under a metal roof, as it can stick to the back of the roof and end up tearing when the roof expands and contracts.“E-Foil”, which is basically a foil faced bubble wrap makes a great reflective barrier insulation and acts as a cushion between your old roof and the new metal roof. As an added bonus the foil also reflects heat away from your home during the warmer months of the year which will reduce your energy costs for cooling your home. E-Foil works best when installed under corrugated metal roof panels as this allows for airspace between the roof and the foil, which creates natural venting. If you already have done your homework on metal roofs then you know that they last for decades longer than asphalt shingles, require little maintenance and offer many other advantages. Now that you know you won’t have to remove your old roof the decision to go with metal should be a no-brainer.

Steel Building Kits

Steel Building kits are an easy way to construct a new building for most any need. They have always enjoyed popularity for industrial purposes, and governmental purposes. But these kits are seeing a rise in popularity with homeowners too.A quality-built steel building kit provides an easy to assemble building at a very competitive price and with a long life span to boot. Steel building kits are offered in various colors and sizes in order to satisfy the specifications of the customers – both residential and commercial. The steel building kit provides strength and structural integrity. There are many types of steel buildings available, but one of the most popular for residential and smaller commercial applications is the type with a stand-alone frame. Residential (do-it-yourself) builders seem to prefer the frame kits that consist of metal studs. The frame is built just like a traditional wood frame studded building. You can see an example of this at http://www.absoluterv.com/Garage_Frame.htmDepending upon the size of the building, you can get these studs in 2” x 3” or 2” x 4”. This type of frame system is much easier to install for most people than is an I-beam and cable structure. In the past, you would find that most steel buildings were assembled by attaching purlins and girts to a rigid I-Beam. This heavy I-Beam bears almost the entire load stress of the building. That's why it has to be so big and heavy, requiring a forklift or crane to assemble. Using this method, the exterior panels are most definitely a part of the structural consideration. With a building that's up to 12.5 feet in height or shorter, those exterior wall panels are usually attached to only a channel running next to and parallel to the floor and then again up at eave.Take away the exterior panels on other buildings, and you'll find there's nothing there - no support, no stability! This is why you would hear about those "heavy duty" 26 gauge panels. Those buildings need them! While this might have been appropriate for a large structure such as a horse arena, a warehouse, or the like, this construction method was not appropriate for ma and pa homeowner trying to put this together on weekends. For smaller buildings, most people should consider the stand-alone frame buildings. The frame systems on these steel building kits are "stand alone". This means the loads are evenly distributed throughout the frame system. You can even apply siding that’s not metal – just like you would on a traditional building frame. What does this mean to you?•It means you won't be dealing with large I-Beams that require forklifts or cranes. Our heaviest single component weighs 28.65 pounds!•It means your end walls will not have those frustrating "cross-tied cable ends" that never adjust properly. This type of building won’t be "wired" together!•It means you'll save money on your concrete/foundation because you won't need massive 3' x 3' footings to support those isolated areas of load stress. •It means that you can use most any exterior material you want on the outside of your building: wood, stucco, brick, stone etc. You can have your building match your house, landscape or most anything else you want!
